Hannah is a thirty-something office manager who later becomes the P.A. to the company's CEO. She has so many mental problems, it's almost impossible to find anything vaguely sane about her, but she sails through life blissfully in complete denial and unaware of what a nightmare she makes for her family, friends, colleagues and strangers unfortunate enough to cross her path.

Tim is a thirty-something microbiologist. He is an acdemic and very grounded and rational, but somewhat world weary and despairing of his wife's antics, but he is so in love with her that he just goes along with whatever she wants -- his motto is "anything for a quiet life." Tim met Hannah at university.

Josh is their mildly rebellious teenage son, who throughout the series moves from school to college to university, and eventually gets married and has a child of his own.

Karen is Hannah's calm and level headed assistant at work. More than a colleague, she is a friend - a shoulder to lean on, or cry on as the case may be and the voice of reason trying to stop Hannah doing anything too outrageous or reckless.

Tony is their layabout departmental manager. Lazy and incompetent, he keeps his job by sucking up to the CEO and losing at every round of golf they play together.

Anya is the company's cleaning lady, who transforms slowly throughout the series from mildly stroppy to sociopathic as we learn more about what she has done to people she didn't like in her native Poland.

Sir Charles is the billionaire CEO and founder of the company Hannah works at. He is enormously fat and pompous. He finds Hannah very attractive and as such she uses her manipulative tendencies to run rings round him.

Maddie is Hannah's perpetually stoned spiritualist friend, who only gets involved when Hannah rings her and begs favours.

Imogen and Stephen Hampstead-Potterton-Longman are the rich and snobby parents of Josh's fiancee and later wife, Eloise.

Helena and George are Tim's snobby parents who live in Bath, with Helena in charge and George henpecked and compliant.

Joe is Hannah's OCD father -- a music hall comedian who lives in Birmingham - even more of a character than his daughter and played to perfection by Alan Saunders.
